I have long admired macramé plant hangers on Instagram and Pinterest, but have to confess I have been a little nervous to try it out solo, as I had heard that macramé was quite difficult to grasp. I even bought some macramé yarn back in October, but it got put away as I was busy making lots of Christmas gifts, including the Dresden quilt for my parents.
There is nothing like a new year and a new venture though, to inspire you to push yourself – and I am so pleased that I did. I spent a lovely Sunday morning a few weeks ago learning some basic macramé knots (square knots and spiral square knots) and jumped in to make my first plant hanger. I loosely used a couple of tutorials and put my own spin on it, and am delighted with the result.
I hung the piece from the back of my bedroom door to work on and it worked really well. I was a little short for the first section so stood on a kids stool for a while. Once I got the hang of the knots it was fairly straightforward, and I am so pleased I finally tried this wonderful craft.
I am excited to try some other plant hangers but I also have some jewellery and other pieces in mind. Watch this space!
